James grew up on a hobby farm east of Red Deer. He attended the University of Alberta where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2007. James articled with a well-established Red Deer law firm and was called to the Alberta bar in 2008. He continued with the firm as an associate and joined the partnership in 2013. James left the firm in early 2021 to open his own office — Cawsey Law.

James practices exclusively as a solicitor, with a focus on the legal needs of owner-managed businesses and their shareholders. He represents a wide range of clients throughout a variety of industries, including oilfield servicing, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, professional services, real estate, retail, and hospitality.
